The Board of Directors of Lutheran Outdoor Ministries is happy to announce the hiring of the organization’s first executive director. Don Johnson, former director of Calumet Lutheran Ministries in New Hampshire and more recently the executive director of Family Promise in Concord, NH; a vice president at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia; and Executive Director of Project Connect, a program of the Eastern Cluster of Lutheran Seminaries; accepted the position last week. Johnson will begin on August 17, 2015. His hiring is a term call for 24-months.
The LOM board believes that Don’s relationship building skills and his passion for outdoor ministries will help lead LOM into the future. In the first year, Don will be working hard to connect with all the camps and retreat centers affiliated with the ELCA. He will be listening to our network needs and sharing what LOM has to offer. He will also be working to enhance LOM’s development plan to ensure the future of this organization. Our hope is that with Don’s passion and enthusiasm for outdoor ministries, relationships will be built and our network will grow stronger.
LOM Board President Rev. Nathan Pile said hiring an executive director is a huge step in moving LOM forward into the future.
“This spring, a task force of the board developed an annual fund plan with Dick Sayther from GSB. After doing a sampling of camps, the task force felt that hiring a full-time Executive Director would provide the needed time and show the network we are serious about making this organization work for all 125+ sites. By taking this action, the board wanted to move the organization forward while being good stewards of the $170,000 we have acquired already for this position. We are looking forward to this new chapter of Lutheran Outdoor Ministries under the leadership of Don Johnson,” Pile said.
